Project Overview
Card.io is a speculative workplace wellness tool designed to support mental transitions throughout the day, especially for Gen Z and neurodivergent professionals who struggle with burnout, emotional carryover, and structure in hybrid work environments.
Created as part of a Design Studio module, this group project proposes a physical and behavioural intervention: a card dispenser that delivers small, ritual-based tasks to encourage focus, decompression, and healthy work rhythms.
Problem
The boundaries between work and life have blurred, and hybrid work has become the norm. 42% of Gen Z workers report burnout, and 98% struggle with mental separation between tasks and time zones. For neurodivergent individuals, particularly those with ADHD, the absence of clear transitions can lead to heightened anxiety, cognitive fatigue, and health neglect.
Workplaces rarely offer tools to support mental transitions, yet doing so is key to long-term performance and well-being.
Solution
Card.io introduces a low-tech but high-impact ritual: a card dispenser placed in the office, offering check-in/check-out cards across three key points, start, midday, and end. Each card contains a prompt, a light activity like mindful breathing, stretching, or reflection, designed to ease cognitive load and boost readiness.
The system is:
- Inclusive, normalising rest and ritual for all employees
- Gamified, using surprise and reward mechanics
- Non-intrusive, requiring no apps or logins
Our team designed the branding, persona journey, dispenser interaction, card sets, and a before/after behavioural shift map. The tone is optimistic, structured, and quietly radical, redefining productivity through empathy.
